If you have bought motorised blinds for a few years, you have met at least two of these. The useful question is not what went wrong but which test would have caught it before the container left.
Why failures cluster around one or two parameters
In motorised blinds, the parameters in the table below are not independent. Noise and Torque between them explain most field failures, and both are routinely omitted from quotations because they are expensive to guarantee and easy to leave vague.
| Parameter | Typical range | Why it decides failure |
|---|---|---|
| Noise | <= 35 dB at 1 m | Guest rooms and bedrooms are unforgiving above 40 dB. |
| Torque | 1.2-3.0 Nm | Must be matched to blind width and weight; undersized motors stall. |
| Battery life | 300-500 cycles per charge | Real life is lower with heavy wooden blinds. |
| Limit setting | electronic with memory | Mechanical limits drift and are the main commissioning complaint. |

1. Motor stall on wide blinds
What you see. The blind stops halfway or hums without moving.
Why it happens. Torque below what the blind weight and friction require.
How to catch it before you order. Measure running current at full load and compare against the motor curve.
What to specify instead. Size the motor to the widest blind in the range, not the average; add a margin for wooden slats.
2. Battery drain
What you see. Batteries need charging every few weeks instead of twice a year.
Why it happens. Friction in the headrail, or a motor with high standby current.
How to catch it before you order. Cycle test with a logged current draw over 300 cycles.
What to specify instead. Lower-friction headrail, deep-sleep standby, and a realistic cycle figure in the datasheet.

3. Protocol incompatibility
What you see. The blind works on the app but not on the building system.
Why it happens. Proprietary RF presented as ‘smart’, or a gateway that is not certified for the system.
How to catch it before you order. Bench test with the actual third-party controller before shipping.
What to specify instead. Specify a certified protocol and test with the buyer’s controller, not a demo unit.
4. Limit drift
What you see. The blind creeps past its top or bottom limit over months.
Why it happens. Mechanical limit switches or unstable encoder counts.
How to catch it before you order. 1000-cycle endurance with position measurement every 100 cycles.
What to specify instead. Electronic limits with non-volatile memory, and re-calibration as a documented service step.

Building a test plan you will actually run
| Test | Method | Acceptance |
|---|---|---|
| Operation noise | 1 m, anechoic or quiet room | <= 35 dB |
| Cycle endurance | 1000 cycles with load | position drift <= 2 mm |
| Torque and current | full load | within motor curve |
| Battery cycles | 300 cycles | >= 80 % capacity retained |
| Protocol conformance | certification test | pass for declared protocol |
Five tests is enough for a first order. The point is not comprehensiveness, it is that the same five run on every lot, so a change becomes visible. A test nobody repeats is a story, not a control.
Run them on production material, not on a development sample. Ask for the report to carry the lot number and the date, and keep it with the shipment file. When a claim arrives two years later, that file is the difference between a discussion and a write-off.
What the report should contain
- The method, by standard number, not by description.
- The measured value, not only pass or fail. A marginal pass tells you where the risk sits.
- The sampling position: which roll, which metre, which batch.
- The conditioning before testing, because humidity changes several of these results.
- The laboratory name and the date, so the report can be traced.
Specification ranges for motorised blinds are on the product page. If a failure you are seeing is not covered here, send the batch details and photographs — we will tell you what we think caused it, including when the cause is upstream of the material.
Questions buyers ask before ordering
How many cycles will the battery really do?
300-500 on a 50 mm wooden blind, less on wide heavy blinds. We quote the tested figure and will send the cycle log; treat any figure above 600 with suspicion.
Can it work with Home Assistant?
Yes if you choose Zigbee or Matter. RF 433 needs a bridge and is not a smart-home answer, whatever the listing says.
Is a hub required?
For WiFi, no. For Zigbee, yes, unless your buyer already has one. This is the most common pre-sales question and the most common source of returns.
Seven lines that turn a quotation into a specification
Most post-delivery arguments are not about quality. They are about a document that never said which figure would be measured, on which instrument, at whose cost.
- Manual override: required is the market band. Fix the figure you will test at goods-in, and the instrument you will test it with.
- Power (Li-ion battery / 12 V DC / hardwired): fix the value per shipment, and state who pays for the re-test if a lot lands outside it.
- Protocol: RF 433 / Zigbee / WiFi / Matter / Z-Wave is not an answer on its own. Ask for the last three lots’ actual readings and the spread behind them.
- Noise: agree the test method with the number. Two labs, two methods, two answers, one argument.
- Price validity: the period during which the quoted figure holds, and what happens to it when the raw-material index moves.
- Remedy: rework, replacement or credit, and the point at which each applies.
- Sample retention: one production sample per lot stays with the mill for twelve months. Claims are settled against it, not against memory.
Three questions, and the answers that separate mills
If the claim you are handling is going to be decided on a call, take these three questions into it.
| Question | Answer that should worry you | Answer that holds up |
|---|---|---|
| Which test catches motor stall on wide blinds? | “We have never had a complaint.” | Torque and current — on the production lot, with the acceptance figure written into the report and not into the email. |
| May I see a report for a lot you shipped last month? | “That is confidential customer information.” | A redacted report, which carries every number that matters and none of the customer’s identity. |
| Where in the Li-ion battery / 12 V DC / hardwired band will this order sit? | “In the middle, normally.” | A stated target and the readings behind it. Power drifting inside the band is how a conforming lot still fails. |
