Buyers argue about battery life more than about any other figure in motorised blinds, and they usually argue about the wrong part of it: the number itself rather than the tolerance behind it.
What battery life actually controls in motorised blinds
Real life is lower with heavy wooden blinds.
The number is easy to quote and hard to hold, and the difference between those two things is what you are actually buying.
For Motorised blinds, the working range is 300-500 cycles per charge. Inside that band the choice is commercial; outside it, the product changes category and so does the price.

What 300-500 cycles per charge does not tell you
| Position | Value | Effect on motorised blinds | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor | 300 | Lowest cost, least margin for process variation | Motor stall on wide blinds within a season |
| Working middle | 300-500 cycles per charge | Predictable performance at a normal price | Nothing to negotiate, nothing to explain |
| Ceiling | 500 cycles per charge | Best performance, highest cost | Cost the end product may not recover |
Buyers default to the floor because it is the cheapest compliant answer. That is rational until the first claim, and then the saving is measured against a replacement shipment.
The figure that decides the outcome is not battery life itself but the tolerance around it. A supplier who quotes 300-500 cycles per charge without a tolerance has not quoted a specification, and the first lot will define the tolerance for you.
How to measure battery life
The reference method here is Protocol conformance, run to certification test, with an acceptance of pass for declared protocol. The method is the easy part; sampling and conditioning are where reports diverge.
Take samples from the beginning, middle and end of the run. A single sample from the top of a roll tells you about the top of that roll, and battery life varies more across a run than most buyers expect.
Record the measured value rather than pass or fail. A marginal pass on battery life tells you the process is running at the edge, which is the information you need before the next lot rather than after it.

Battery life does not stand alone
Battery life moves with limit setting (electronic with memory) and with integration (Alexa / Google / HomeKit / control system). Tightening one usually costs money in another, and a supplier who accepts every tolerance without comment has either not understood the interaction or is planning to substitute.
When you change battery life, re-check the two neighbours before you approve the sample. Most of the samples we re-make are caused by a change in one figure that was not followed through.
The clause to write for battery life
The line below is the version we can quote against without inventing anything. Battery life appears with a tolerance and a test, not as a standalone number.
Motorised 50 mm basswood venetian blind, Li-ion battery, Zigbee 3.0, <= 32 dB, 2.0 Nm, electronic limits, manual override, 400 cycles per charge, EN 13120 safety
The clause that protects you is not the value, it is the sentence that says what happens when the value is missed. Put it in the purchase order, not only in the enquiry.

When battery life goes wrong
Motor stall on wide blinds. The blind stops halfway or hums without moving.
The cause is usually torque below what the blind weight and friction require.
The test that catches it: Measure running current at full load and compare against the motor curve.
What to specify instead: Size the motor to the widest blind in the range, not the average; add a margin for wooden slats.
Note that the fix is a specification change, not a negotiation. By the time the claim is made, the only remaining lever is who pays for it.
Four questions about battery life, before you order
- What tolerance do you hold on battery life, and what did your last three lots measure against it?
- Which method do you use for protocol conformance, and which laboratory signs the report?
- When battery life falls outside 300-500 cycles per charge, do you rework, downgrade, or ship and hope?
- Which of limit setting or integration would you move first to hit a lower price?
The answers are more useful than a certificate, because they show whether the process is controlled or merely inspected. Full ranges for motorised blinds are on the product page, and the measurement regime is described on the quality control page.
Questions buyers ask before ordering
How many cycles will the battery really do?
300-500 on a 50 mm wooden blind, less on wide heavy blinds. We quote the tested figure and will send the cycle log; treat any figure above 600 with suspicion.
Can it work with Home Assistant?
Yes if you choose Zigbee or Matter. RF 433 needs a bridge and is not a smart-home answer, whatever the listing says.
Failure modes, and the test that catches each one
A specification only earns its keep if it names the failure it prevents. These are the two that matter for the motorised blinds figures on this page.
| Failure | What triggers it | Test to demand on the production lot |
|---|---|---|
| Limit drift | Mechanical limit switches or unstable encoder counts. | Battery cycles — 300 cycles; acceptance >= 80 % capacity retained |
| Motor stall on wide blinds | Torque below what the blind weight and friction require. | Protocol conformance — certification test; acceptance pass for declared protocol |
The other two, with acceptance numbers attached, are in the full failure analysis for motorised blinds. A supplier who cannot name the mode he sees most often is describing a catalogue, not a process.
From quotation to specification in seven lines
Leave the tolerance and the method out and every dispute is settled by whoever needs the goods more.
- Noise: the figure you will accept inside the <= 35 dB at 1 m band, the tolerance on it, and the method used to measure it.
- Torque (1.2-3.0 Nm): name the number, not the word. If the answer only repeats the band, ask which point inside it is being offered for this order.
- Battery life: 300-500 cycles per charge is the market band. Fix the figure you will test at goods-in, and the instrument you will test it with.
- Limit setting (electronic with memory): fix the value per shipment, and state who pays for the re-test if a lot lands outside it.
- Who inspects: third-party, in-house or none, decided in advance, with the AQL level written down.
- Reference sample: the signed sample is the definition of the colour, not the photograph in the catalogue.
- Price validity: the period during which the quoted figure holds, and what happens to it when the raw-material index moves.
