Hinge in Plantation shutters: Range, Tolerance and How to Test It

Hinge is the figure that gets written into a purchase order and then measured by nobody. This is what it controls, how to measure it, and what happens when it drifts.

What hinge actually controls in shutters

Hidden hinges cost more and eliminate the visible line.

It also explains why hinge is the first line a buyer loosens and the last line a claim refers to.

For Plantation shutters, the working range is hidden / aluminium / stainless. Inside that band the choice is commercial; outside it, the product changes category and so does the price.

How to choose a hinge option

Hinge: the options and what each one buys
Option What it changes in shutters When it is the right choice
hidden The lowest-cost option in the family. Visible light gaps is where it usually ends up. Cost-led programmes with a short service life
aluminium The volume middle: enough margin for process variation without paying for headroom the end product cannot use. Most repeat programmes, and the safest default
stainless The top of the family, where the process is controlled tightly enough to guarantee it. A warranty, a tender, or a specification that cannot be renegotiated

These are alternatives, not points on a scale. Hinge is chosen by the application rather than by price, and a supplier who quotes one option as if it were interchangeable with another is quoting a different product.

Buyers default to the floor because it is the cheapest compliant answer. That is rational until the first claim, and then the saving is measured against a replacement shipment.

The figure that decides the outcome is not hinge itself but the tolerance around it. A supplier who quotes hidden / aluminium / stainless without a tolerance has not quoted a specification, and the first lot will define the tolerance for you.

How to measure hinge

The reference method here is Moisture content (wood), run to meter, with an acceptance of 8-12 %. The method is the easy part; sampling and conditioning are where reports diverge.

Measure on the goods as delivered, not on the greige or the pre-finished material. The figure that matters is the one in the product your customer receives.

Record the measured value rather than pass or fail. A marginal pass on hinge tells you the process is running at the edge, which is the information you need before the next lot rather than after it.

Hinge does not stand alone

Hinge moves with light gap (<= 3 mm between panels) and with tilt rod (front / hidden / gear-driven). Tightening one usually costs money in another, and a supplier who accepts every tolerance without comment has either not understood the interaction or is planning to substitute.

This is why a specification written as a list of independent tolerances is weaker than one written as a construction. The list lets a supplier satisfy each line while missing the product.

The clause to write for hinge

The line below is the version we can quote against without inventing anything. Hinge appears with a tolerance and a test, not as a standalone number.

Plantation shutter, basswood, 89 mm louver, L-frame, 3 panels, hidden hinge, light gap <= 3 mm, painted to RAL 9010, moisture content 8-12 %

Write it once and reuse it. The buyers who avoid claims are not stricter than everyone else; they send the same well-written clause every time.

When hinge goes wrong

Visible light gaps. Daylight shows through between panels and frame.

The cause is usually frame out of square, or panels machined without a jig.

The test that catches it: Assemble on a flat table, measure gaps at three heights.

What to specify instead: Jig-based machining plus a final assembly check; specify <= 3 mm and inspect every unit.

None of this is visible in a quotation. It becomes visible in a retained sample and a lot record, which is why the paperwork matters more than the price on this parameter.

Four questions about hinge, before you order

  1. What tolerance do you hold on hinge, and what did your last three lots measure against it?
  2. Which method do you use for moisture content (wood), and which laboratory signs the report?
  3. When hinge falls outside hidden / aluminium / stainless, do you rework, downgrade, or ship and hope?
  4. Which of light gap or tilt rod would you move first to hit a lower price?

The answers are more useful than a certificate, because they show whether the process is controlled or merely inspected. Full ranges for shutters are on the product page, and the measurement regime is described on the quality control page.

Questions buyers ask before ordering

Which louver width should I stock?

89 mm covers 80 % of residential demand. 114 mm is a premium upgrade that needs a deeper frame, so stock it only if you sell design-led projects.

Can shutters be fitted inside a recess?

Yes with an L-frame. Outside the recess with a Z-frame. The measuring method differs and getting it wrong is the most common installation complaint.

From quotation to specification in seven lines

Leave the tolerance and the method out and every dispute is settled by whoever needs the goods more.

  1. Hinge (hidden / aluminium / stainless): name the number, not the word. If the answer only repeats the band, ask which point inside it is being offered for this order.
  2. Light gap: <= 3 mm between panels is the market band. Fix the figure you will test at goods-in, and the instrument you will test it with.
  3. Tilt rod (front / hidden / gear-driven): fix the value per shipment, and state who pays for the re-test if a lot lands outside it.
  4. Finish: painted / stained / primed is not an answer on its own. Ask for the last three lots’ actual readings and the spread behind them.
  5. Sample retention: one production sample per lot stays with the mill for twelve months. Claims are settled against it, not against memory.
  6. Test reports: name the standard as well as the test. A pass on a development sample is not a pass on a production lot.
  7. Deviation rule: anything outside the agreed bands is reported before shipment, not after arrival.

Questions worth asking before the price is agreed

The questions below are the ones that cannot be answered from a catalogue, which is exactly why they are worth asking.

Question Answer that should worry you Answer that holds up
Who signs the test report, and against which standard? “Our QC department signs it.” A named standard, a named method and a signature that belongs to somebody who can be asked again next year.
How do you hold light gap at <= 3 mm between panels? “That is standard for us, no problem.” The last three lots’ readings, the instrument used and who signs the report. Louver sag starts here.
What happens if finish misses the painted / stained / primed requirement? “It will not happen.” A re-test clause, the tolerance on the re-test, and the point at which the lot is remade rather than discounted.
