On 3D mesh, the monofilament diameter sets the floor of the price and the number of lamination passes sets the ceiling; the unit price is what is left after both.
Where the money goes in 3D mesh
| Cost line | Share of price | What moves it | Yarn (monofilament + face) | 45-55 % | Monofilament grade is the first place to look, not face yarn price | Knitting and energy | 15-20 % | Machine gauge determines output; narrow widths raise cost per usable metre | Dyeing | 10-15 % | Piece dyeing above 400 gsm risks shading across the beam | Lamination | 8-12 % | Hot-melt costs more than flame and is worth it | Packaging and freight | 8-12 % | Roll compression matters; uncompressed rolls waste 20-30 % of container volume |
|---|

Reading the 3D mesh structure
The largest line is yarn (monofilament + face) at 45-55 %. That is where a supplier has the most room to move and the most temptation to substitute. When a quote comes in well below the market, the difference is almost always here rather than in labour or packaging.
The smallest line is often the one that protects you: packaging and freight at 8-12 %. Cutting testing or packaging saves a visible amount per unit and costs a multiple of it in claims. This is the first place a new supplier cuts and the last place a serious one does.
3D mesh: three levers that actually move the price
Colour count, which is where 3D mesh cost is really set
Most buyers push on total quantity. The factory cost is driven by setups, not by total metres, and 300-500 m per colour is quoted per colour because a colour change resets the process. Four shades at a quarter of the volume each cost more to make than one shade at the full volume, even though the total is identical. Consolidating shades usually beats a volume discount.
Loosening colour fastness to rubbing, if the product allows it
A tight tolerance on a parameter the product does not need is pure cost. Colour fastness to rubbing at >= grade 4 is usually where a specification has been carried over from another programme without being re-examined. Loosening it recovers more than the discount being negotiated, and it does not damage the product.
Timing against a 15-25 days cycle
Production slots matter. A 15-25 days cycle can usually be met; a two-week expedite usually cannot, and when it is accepted the cost appears as overtime and air freight rather than in the unit price. Booking a slot four weeks out is the cheapest concession a buyer has.

Where 3D mesh savings come back as claims
The cause is monofilament too thin or density too low for the load, or the wrong polymer for the climate. This is what a 10 % saving looks like eighteen months later, and it is why the cheapest quote is rarely the lowest landed cost.
A working rule: price the difference between quotes against the cost of one replacement shipment. If the gap is smaller than that, the decision is not really about price.
3D mesh: what to ask for in the quotation
- The specification, line by line, against compression recovery and air permeability at the values you asked for.
- The validity period, because the raw material index moves before the price list does On 3D mesh that is thickness at 3-15 mm.
- What is included: compression recovery, packing, certification, sample courier.
- The MOQ per colour (300-500 m per colour is typical) separately from the order minimum.
- The payment terms and what would change them For 3D mesh fabric it is weight at 180-420 gsm that settles it.
Cost detail for the material itself is on the 3D mesh page; the commercial terms we work to are on the logistics page.

Questions buyers ask before ordering
How do you verify tolerance against 45-55 % on cost breakdown?
On cost breakdown, set 45-55 % as the acceptance figure.
Does tolerance move between the cost breakdown sample and bulk?
On cost breakdown, the answer is 45-55 %, and the reason is the beam setup.
What happens to cost breakdown if we need tolerance tighter than 45-55 %?
On cost breakdown, our standard is 45-55 %, verified by lab certificate.
3D mesh: reading a quote that looks too low
A quote 15-20 % below the market is not a negotiating position, it is a different product. These are the five places the difference hides, in the order it usually appears.
- Thickness 3-15 mm — measured at three positions on the roll, recorded as a number rather than pass or fail On 3D mesh, skipping this is what produces compression set in the seat area.
- Weight 180-420 gsm — cut from the middle of the lot, not from the end of the roll For 3D mesh fabric, the figure to write down is compression recovery at 90 % or better.
- Compression recovery 90 % or better — read at 23 C / 50 % RH after conditioning, not straight off the machine On 3D mesh that is thickness at 3-15 mm.
- Air permeability 300-1200 L/m2/s — checked on production material, at in-process rather than only at pre-shipment For 3D mesh fabric it is weight at 180-420 gsm that settles it.
- Monofilament diameter 0.08-0.20 mm — stated in the purchase order with the test method beside it On 3D mesh, skipping this is what produces compression set in the seat area.
- ISO 12947 for abrasion, ISO 6330 / ISO 5077 for dimensional change — run to the method named above; the report travels with the lot For 3D mesh fabric, the figure to write down is compression recovery at 90 % or better.
3D mesh: three concessions that lower the price honestly
None of these damages the product, and together they usually recover more than the discount being negotiated.
- Fewer colours. Setup is per colour, so consolidating shades cuts cost without touching the specification On 3D mesh that is thickness at 3-15 mm.
- A longer slot. Four extra weeks lets the factory combine runs; the saving is real and it costs you nothing if the launch date allows it For 3D mesh fabric it is weight at 180-420 gsm that settles it.
- Looser non-critical tolerances. A tight figure on colour fastness to rubbing adds cost and the product does not need it.
The three price bands behind a 3D mesh quotation
A 3D mesh fabric price is a stack, not a number. Almost all of the spread between offers comes from the monofilament diameter, then the number of lamination passes, and only then whether the surface layer is tricot or open mesh.
| Tier | What changes in 3D mesh fabric | What it means at thickness | Where it shows up | Entry | a thinner monofilament and a single-pass lamination | thickness from 3 upward, weight from 180 | compression set in the seat area inside the first season | Standard | thickness held at 3-15 mm | thickness inside 3-15 mm, weight inside 180-420 gsm | The 3D mesh lot matches the sample | Controlled | whether the surface layer is tricot or open mesh plus retained samples | compression recovery at the top of 90 % or better, logged per lot | An audit trail a brand customer accepts; measured on thickness, 3-15 mm |
|---|
The step from entry to standard on 3D mesh is usually 6-12 %%, and it buys the distance between compression set in the seat area and a 3D mesh lot that passes inspection. The step to controlled is smaller in money and larger in paperwork: the number of lamination passes on file, per 3D mesh lot, for as long as the warranty runs.
Ask which tier a 3D mesh quotation sits in before comparing it. Two 3D mesh offers that both name thickness at 3-15 mm can be compared; two that name only the category cannot.
What a 3D mesh quote below the floor has already removed
A 3D mesh fabric offer 15 %% under the median is rarely a better deal. The saving is taken from one of four places, and three of them are visible if you ask about thickness.
- the monofilament diameter — moved one step down the range, still inside the band, no longer inside what sportswear panels needs.
- the number of lamination passes — reduced until the 3D mesh sample still looks right and the fifth lot does not.
- whether the surface layer is tricot or open mesh — dropped to a standard option that meets the drawing and not the sportswear panels use.
- Inspection and retained samples — the line nobody prices on 3D mesh fabric, and the first thing a low quote removes.
None of the four shows up as a defect at goods-in on 3D mesh. Compression set in the seat area appears at the end user, which is why a claim on a cheap lot is hard to win: the material is inside the written air permeability band and outside the written use.
The counter is one paragraph in the enquiry: name thickness at 3-15 mm, name weight at 180-420 gsm, and ask which of the four was changed to reach the price.
